The clients’ property included a main residence and a mother-in-law suite, which was connected above ground only. However, they envisioned a more meaningful connection below ground—one that would transform the experience of the home. After returning from a trip through Italy, inspired by the character and atmosphere of the wineries they visited, they asked us to create a wine cellar that would link the two basements.
In response, we designed a stone barrel-vaulted passage that connects the spaces. The barrel vault is reminiscent of an Italian cellar, while a glass skylight allows in soft, ambient light from above and creates a fun moment walking over the glass above. The result is more than a connection; it is an immersive experience that reflects the clients’ travels and brings a touch of Old World character into their home.
